St. Athanasius Nursery and Primary School was born out of a simple but urgent conviction: that every child in this community deserves access to quality, caring education, regardless of their family’s circumstances.
When the school was founded in Mengo, Kampala, the founders saw children in the surrounding area who lacked consistent access to schooling. Poverty, instability, and limited community resources meant that many children were growing up without the foundation they needed to build a decent future. Something had to be done.
So St. Athanasius was created. Not as a business venture. Not as a status symbol. But as a response to a real human need, built on faith, sustained by community, and driven by love for children.
Today, the school continues to grow. Our enrollment has expanded. Our programs have deepened. Our reputation in the community has been earned through years of genuine, consistent care. But the founding purpose has never changed: to give vulnerable children a chance, and to do it well.
We are a Christian institution, and our faith is not background decoration. It is the foundation of everything we do. The name of our school honors St. Athanasius, a man of courage and conviction in the early church, and we hope to instill those same qualities in every child we teach.
Our faith expresses itself in practical love. It means we treat every child as a person of infinite worth. It means we care about their dignity, not just their grades. It means we model honesty, humility, and service through the lives of our staff every day.
We welcome children and families of all backgrounds. Our faith does not divide. It draws people together around a shared commitment to what is good, true, and right.
Love shows up in the matron who checks on a homesick child at night. In the teacher who stays after class to help a student who is struggling. In the way we greet every family at the gate. We work hard to make sure that every person who enters our school feels genuinely welcome and genuinely cared for.
Our children come from many different families, with many different stories. We celebrate that diversity. We teach our students to listen to one another, to question and explore, and to respect viewpoints that are different from their own.
We want our children to be brave. To try things they are not sure they can do. To speak up when something is wrong. To keep going when things get hard. We model courage through our staff and we reward it in our students. A child who learns to be courageous in small things grows into an adult who can lead with confidence.
Excellence at St. Athanasius is not about being the best. It is about giving your best. It is a culture of effort, care, and continuous improvement that we nurture in students and staff alike.
We hold ourselves to a high standard because we believe our children are worth it.
St. Athanasius is woven into the fabric of Mengo. We are not an island. We are a community institution. Parents trust us with their most precious people. Local leaders refer families to us. Churches partner with us. The school has become a gathering point for the community’s hopes and a reliable source of support for families in need.
We take that role seriously. When a family is struggling, we try to help. When a child needs more than just a classroom, we respond. We are more than a school. We are a pillar of this neighborhood.
We know there is still much to be done. Our facilities need investment. More children need support. More families need the kind of stability and care that St. Athanasius provides. We are committed to growing thoughtfully, sustainably, and always with the best interests of our children at the center of every decision.
We are grateful for every partner, every donor, every volunteer, and every well-wisher who has joined us on this journey. We could not do this without you, and we do not take that for granted.
We are a God loving community, and everything about our school reflects that. We believe in love: love for each child, love for each other, and love for the work we do. We believe in open mindedness: welcoming every child and every family, no matter their background. We believe in valiance: encouraging our children to be brave, to try, and to keep going. And we believe in excellence: not as a performance, but as a standard of care we hold ourselves to every single day.
